Spain is experiencing an exceptional moment in olive oil production. The weather conditions have favoured a notable increase in the harvest, reaching figures that many consider historic. In our olive grove, we are not only celebrating this stage, but also reflecting on what it means for us and for the consumer.
A year of abundance
The generous rains of the last few months have allowed the olive groves to develop in optimal conditions, resulting in a production that exceeds expectations. With a 45% increase in the national harvest, reaching 1.4 million tonnes compared to 850,000 tonnes the previous year, producers of early harvest oils, for whose olive groves the rains arrived after the harvest, have not benefited from this advantage. Spanish olive oil is in a period of expansion. This phenomenon has brought with it a reduction in prices, something that benefits the consumer, but which poses challenges for producers.
However, the winter rains with which our fields have been generously irrigated make us optimistic about the next harvest and for those of us who work in this sector, this situation is an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to quality. Beyond the numbers, each harvest reminds us of the importance of taking care of the process from the field to the mill, guaranteeing an exceptional oil in terms of aroma, flavour and properties.
Challenges in times of growth
Increased supply has led to an adjustment in market prices. Although this may seem a great advantage for consumers, for artisan producers it is a challenge in terms of profitability and sustainability. We are committed to careful production, where each bottle of our oil reflects the effort and dedication of an entire team.
In addition, international competition is increasing. Spain continues to lead world production with more than 40% of the total, but countries such as Italy and Greece are seeking to strengthen their position in the market. In this context, differentiating ourselves through quality, respect for the land and the authenticity of the process becomes more relevant than ever. The mission is to continue offering a product that is not only accessible, but that preserves the unique character of Spanish extra virgin olive oil.
The value of tradition and innovation
In this ‘Golden Age’ of olive oil, the key to success lies in combining traditional wisdom with technological innovations. From the pruning and care of the olive tree to extraction in the mill, every step counts to obtain an oil with its own personality.
That is why at Mare Oleum we are constantly working to improve our techniques, respecting the essence of the olive grove and guaranteeing that every drop of our oil maintains its purity and properties intact. We strive to teach our visitors the importance of choosing quality oils, promoting the knowledge and culture of extra virgin olive oil.
A key moment for the consumer
Falling prices and the abundance of oil on the market can leave many consumers wondering how to choose a good extra virgin olive oil. A fundamental part of our work is to teach the differences between the different types of oil and to help people distinguish the real quality.
Some keys to choosing a good extra virgin olive oil are:
- Label and designation: make sure that the packaging clearly states ‘Extra Virgin Olive Oil’ and not just ‘Olive Oil’, as this makes a big difference in purity and quality.
- Origin and harvest: knowing the origin of the oil and the date of harvest is fundamental. A good EVOO must clearly indicate this information.
- Packaging: avoid oils in transparent or poorly sealed plastic containers. Olive oil is best stored in dark glass or cans that protect it from light and air.
- Tasting and tasting: a good EVOO has fruity aromas, with fresh notes of grass, tomato or almond, depending on the variety. In the mouth, it should be balanced in bitterness and pungency, with no defects.
Looking to the future
If the olive grove teaches us anything, it is that every year is different and that success lies in the ability to adapt. We embrace this new stage with enthusiasm, knowing that quality, respect for the land and love for what we do are the pillars that guide us.
We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to take a closer look at our process and discover why our oil is so special. Whether through a visit to the oil mill or enjoying our oils at your table, we want to share with you this passion that moves us and gives meaning to each harvest.
